Planning Music for a Memorial Service, Funeral or Celebration of Life

Sharon Planer Pianist for Parties

After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music. --Aldous Huxley

The music for your loved one’s service can be a wonderful way to portray their uniqueness and individuality.

Twin Cities Pianist Sharon Planer offers the following suggestions to help you plan music to honor your loved one.

The fact that you are visiting this page indicates that you likely are dealing with the grief of losing a loved one or are preparing to do so.  I extend to you my heartfelt condolences. You may trust me to respectfully and thoughtfully guide you in planning music to honor your loved one.

If you do not have much time to plan the service, it can be difficult to thoughtfully prepare the music.  I have many wonderful song suggestions and I also welcome your requests.  I will work with you to create a repertoire that will reflect the type of atmosphere you wish to create.  If you do not have the time or ambition to discuss the music with me, I can talk with your funeral director or officiate to find out your wishes. The music can be as meditative and reflective or upbeat and as celebratory as you wish.

If your service is being held in a house of worship or a religious institution, you will want to confirm that your music wishes will be honored. Some religious venues and religious leaders may not be able to accommodate all styles of service or song selections.

If you wish to use pre-recorded music, your funeral home or place of worship may have such music available or may allow you to put together your own mix of songs.

If you wish to have ‘live’ music, there are many wonderful options to consider.  A talented vocalist can speak straight to the heart through the power of words and music.  Solo instrumental music creates a beautiful atmosphere such as piano, harp, flute, guitar, violin, ensembles and even bands.

The music can be as unique as the person that is being honored!
